How to wrap a kimono hijab
Kimono hijab come in two shapes — rectangle and square. Here is the basic way to wrap each.
Putting on an inner hijab first gathers the hair and smooths the surface underneath, so either shape sits more cleanly (→ About the inner hijab).
Wrapping a rectangle
Easy to wrap even for beginners, and gives a neat look for everyday wear.
- Place the cloth over your head with one side hanging a little longer than the other.
- Bring the shorter side around your face and pin it under the chin.
- Wrap the longer side around to the opposite shoulder, covering the head.
- Tuck or pin the remaining length at the shoulder or the back of the head.
- Smooth any folds around the face to finish.
Wrapping a square
Folded into a triangle, it drapes beautifully — good for a relaxed look or a formal occasion.
- Fold the cloth in half along the diagonal to make a triangle.
- Place the fold along your forehead and drape it over your head.
- Cross the two corners under your chin, or at the back of your head.
- Pin the crossed section in place.
- Smooth the drape and the folds by hand to finish.
Tips
- Because the fabric is silk, it can feel more slippery than synthetic cloth — adjusting where you pin it helps it hold.
- If there is a part of the pattern you especially want to show — a flower motif, say — unfold the cloth first and check where it falls before you start wrapping.
- Every piece is one of a kind, so the same pattern can look different depending on how you wrap it. We’d encourage you to try a few different styles.
